Cards 04:14
He's out past midnight playing cards and in their dim sunken den she takes her pill with two sidecars Well she used to yell and throw fits and jelly jars and every neighbor knew it when he was out past midnight playing cards But he played his hand and beat her straight with a royal flush across her face But lately evenings haven't been as hard He eats his steak and leaves her once she's had her pill with a few sidecars Some nights he reeks of bourbon and cigars Some nights she knows when he pretends he's been out past midnight playing cards He plays his hand all over the place and she's at home under her poker face They have a narrow repertoire, like frozen tracks for trolley cars She's slurring to herself tonight and he's out there, somewhere playing his cards

She cracks a pack of cigarettes and lets the cellophane fall away Oh she knows she'll quit eventually maybe someday soon but not today Cause like the smoke she blows out into space she's drifting in the wake of worse mistakes She's held together loosely like a junkyard car rusty and decayed Oh she knows she'll quit eventually someday soon she knows she's gonna breakdown But she can't think about tomorrow while she's keeping up the pace of worse mistakes She's living like an avalanche collecting harder questions on the way down. Like how long can she keep it up and how much can she take before pays in the backseat of a strangers car pinned under the weight of worse mistakes Last night she stalled in mid-mistake sprawled out like a broken flower vase With no one there to lift her up no one there to claim her broken face Tucked away in Sunday's paper like a bottle in a tide of worse mistakes Tucked away in Sunday's paper like a bottle in a tide of worse mistakes

Ragged Dick 03:10
You wake up at 4 to the white noise and snow and you reach over her and you grope for your ready remote and with a push of your finger it's gone and you wrestle with sheets till you give in and turn it back on Now you're marching in circles to the rhythms of squares You tap out a beat in the corner where nobody cares And you're wondering how it could be you're on the 2 and the 4 and she's hopelessly on 1 and 3 When will the end take the middle away And the enemies aim at each other and fire and fade like the screen on the old RCA you turn off every night and roll over with nothing to say Just when you know it it's too late to change You'll be standing in line at the grocer just acting your age And when all of your cans have been scanned you'll forget what it was you remembered and heat up the ham Kites in the trash can and clouds in the sky Horatio Alger fell off of his treadmill and died But the motor purred into the night like a lover who sighs when you turn off the tube and the lights

The fruits are rotten and they're making a stink and you can hear it from the far side of town Well everybody's wearing earplugs baby but nobody's turning down Hoisting their sails into the flaccid breeze Hitchhiking naked on a dead-end street And I laugh out loud until I get a look down and see my underwear on top of my feet Jester jester, tongue a blister That's what you get for giving head to transistors No one can wait to hear your hidden advice but if you can't think once you can't think twice You've got everything we need to feel complete Singin' "oooh baby save me yeah well, maybe maybe" Do do do do do do do ba da da da da da da da da da da Ooh ooh oooh I had a fresh idea, it was a sandblasted notion like a flower off the top of my head And when that idea cocoon was gettin' ready to bloom I was waitin' with my butterfly net We got together and we gave it a try The more we flapped its wings well then the less it could fly but we hearsed and rehearsed it 500 times until our fingers were blistered and red Singin' "oooh baby save me, yeah well, maybe maybe" Do do do do do do do ba da da da da da da da da da da Ooh ooh oooh And we hearsed and rehearsed it 500 times 'til it was flawless and perfectly dead

In the End 03:17
A modern version of the ol' Can Can has the world in single-file And in the end as at the start and in the end is where it smarts In the end we bent our friends and had ourselves a time pretending boots and backsides rhyme Babies just don't die much anymore Close the doors and go to sleep Can't see the forest for the tree stumps that I dance on tenderly In the end we danced and sang and banged on tambourines it was a tribute to the trees Wake up with a word stuck in your mind say it once too many times. Feels like that first time years ago you saw yourself on video In the end was empty as a dance floor and the insides of the man fresh from the can Celebrate the moments of your re-constructed youth and a Spanish man will clean up after you

People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! They're yelling and yellin People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! They're showin' off fillings In line in traffic in stadiums in unison At work at the store at the kids at the top of their lungs People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! Yelling and yellin. People are yelling! People are yelling! Their voices are spilling when People are yelling They're strangling the air They call each other names Their faces get so red you can see their veins People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! Everywhere yellin'. People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! They're yellin' and yellin' On stage on talk shows on wax on the verge of collapsing In videos incomprehensibly at the wall at the end of the day Well it's everywhere you are Anger's all the rage Everything's a blast of verbal hand grenades People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! People are yelling! I can't tell you what you wanna hear I can't tell you what you wanna hear

First I introduce a motive reduce it carefully As we mount a little tension Your attention starts to pique The centerpiece is a soft release It's a lease on time with the inside rhyming I pretend the world is ending You pretend you believe When you find yourself astray with the ashtray overflowing your habit's been ingrained It's a comfort to come home And take the ride another time It's a nice device to repeat yourself When you feel sure, it's all yours So I say it twice say it twice Now you know and yes it's true: I don't have a song to sing but baby I've got you Now we've made it past the bridge where we all "Jump Back" like a Go-Go We're racing down the ridge I think I've told you all I know So take the ride another time It's a nice device to repeat yourself When you feel sure, it's all yours So I say it twice, say it twice!
